Job Description and Duties

The Legislative Advocate (Deputy Attorney General) is a subject matter expert on many designated subjects and legislative procedure as well as other matters that may arise that are under the purview of the California Department of Justice.

The advocate serves as the department’s liaison and legislative expert to the California State Legislature and their individual staff, lawyers, and consultants; the Legislative Analyst; Office of Legislative Counsel; California State Auditor; Governor’s Office; state agencies; and stakeholders and associations and represents the department on all related matters before the California State Legislature under the direction of the Director of Legislative Affairs.

Duties include annually analyzing all legislation and amendments, proposed or introduced, that fall within their respective portfolio, coordinating with department subject matter experts and attorneys as necessary to determine legal, policy, and fiscal impacts of proposed language and addressing any concerns by developing a strategy which may include but is not limited to drafting alternative amendments or bringing various internal and external stakeholders together for broader policy discussions around common interests; assisting with the conception, drafting and development of legislation within the Attorney General's annual legislative package; advising and assisting legislative staff and committee consultants on the legal, technical, and policy implications of legislation. 


This position requires frequent communication under significant time pressure and consultation with attorneys, legislators, and dozens of stakeholders to integrate complex technical, legal, and policy issues and formulate or evaluate written and verbal analyses under significant time pressure and often with minimal supervision.

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on DOJ's current telework policy. While DOJ supports telework, in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksite with minimal notification if an urgent need arises.

Good judgment and diplomacy skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; knowledge of or experience with legislation and the legislative process; knowledge of the department's diverse program areas or experience working in or with state agencies; legal experience or expertise; and an ability to work well under pressure.
